The desire to attain success is very natural to all human beings. People from all walks of life and as diverse backgrounds you could imagine are all striving for success. A school student wishes to succeed in his class and the CEO wishes to successfully lead a company. A mother wants to successfully raise her children and the President wants to successfully run the country. There is no exception to the desire for success, although the definition of success differs from person to person.
This intrinsic desire for success comes from our true identity of being the soul. The soul is a part of God who is all-perfect. Hence as the souls we also wish to be perfect and successful like our source – God. Therefore we can see in the world how everyone is naturally chasing success as per their own definitions. To keep the definitions simple, we can divide success into two categories – material and spiritual.
Pursuit for material success is about earning money, owning expensive things, becoming famous, beautiful and skilled. This is usually the parameter of success with which the world judges us. So people are relentlessly engaged day and night in becoming materially successful so that the world can approve of them. Then there is the spiritual pursuit of success. We achieve this success internally and the world can seldom measure our internal success. It is about cleansing our heart and getting rid of the impurities of anger, lust, greed and envy. It is about seeking knowledge of our true relation with God and nurturing love and faith for Him. We may not be materially successful in the eyes of the world, but we will be truly successful in the eyes of God if we can purify ourselves internally.
At the end of our lives all the material success – our wealth, fame, and possessions will be left behind. The only thing that will accompany us into the next life will be the spiritual success we have accumulated. Hence in the final analysis of life, the success that we all strive for will be determined by the extent to which we have achieved purity of heart and love for God. Therefore, if we humans wish to be truly successful, we will have to pursue the right kind of success.
