The Golden Rule of God: He embraces whoever seeks His sharnagati. Watch this beautiful tale narrated by Swami Mukundananda where he explains the magnanimity of God who embraces everyone who seeks His shelter.
When Vibheeshan came to take shelter of Lord Ram, the Lord asked Sugreev for his opinion. Sugreev suggested tying him up with a rope as he was Ravan’s brother. According to him, the enemy’s brother is also an enemy. To his dismay, Lord Ram welcomed Vibheeshan with open arms because He could see Vibheeshan's devotional heart. Lord Ram explained to Sugreev that He would even accept Ravan under His shelter if he seeked His sharanagati with humility. Not only that, but He would also forgive him and make him the ruler of Ayodhya. God accepts everyone as they are. His only condition is of sharanagati (surrender).
On Ram’s instructions, Sugreev brought Vibheeshan to Him. The moment Vibheeshan saw the Lord from far, he went into a devotional samadhi. For a long time, he remained in a trance of divine love. Then, he controlled his bhav and came before the Lord. The sentiments he expressed are considered an ideal of sharanagati since then. In this episode, Swamiji describes the wonderful manner in which which Vibheeshan surrendered to the Lord, and what we all can learn from it to enhance our own sharanagati.
